Spirited Away

Sekizenkan

The Sekizenkan Honkan, located in Shima Onsen in Gunma Prefecture, is a long-established onsen ryokan founded in Genroku 7. The vermilion-lacquered bridge leading to the main building is reminiscent of a red suspension bridge in a movie, and the tunnel inside the building is reminiscent of a tunnel leading to a mysterious town. Hold your breath and cross the bridge as Chihiro did! You will see that Chihiro’s lung capacity is amazing!

Satsuki and Mei’s House

The House of Satsuki and May is located in the Aichi Expo Commemorative Park in Nagakute City, Aichi Prefecture. This is a faithful reproduction of Satsuki and May’s house that appears in the film, and was built as one of the pavilions at the Aichi Expo. Visitors can actually enter the house for a tour, though reservations are required. The interior of the house is exactly as it appeared in the movie, so it is a must-see for Totoro fans.

Princess Mononoke

Yakushima Island, located in Kagoshima Prefecture, is said to be one of the locations of “Princess Mononoke. Yakushima is very famous for its “Jomon Cedars,” which are estimated to be over 7,000 years old. It is also registered as a World Heritage site, and has a mysterious atmosphere just like that depicted in “Princess Mononoke.

Shirakami Sanchi

Along with Yakushima Island, the Shirakami Mountains, which straddle Aomori and Akita prefectures, are said to be the setting for “Princess Mononoke. It is famous for one of the world’s largest primeval beech forests and the cobalt blue “Aoike” pond, which is also registered as a World Heritage site. You can see a fantastic and beautiful scene that looks as if the Deer God really lives there.

Sarushima

This uninhabited island is the site of a former military fortress. It is called the sacred land of the real “Laputa” because of the fantastic sight of greenery growing on the old ground, including the ruins of gun batteries and a long red brick tunnel, and cosplay events are sometimes held because of its unique worldview. The atmosphere is somewhat retro and mysterious, and you can immerse yourself in the world of Laputa!
